When you’re sitting on your deck drinking tea at 6 in the evening on a perfect night and Lynsey asks you if you want to go camping…you say yes! Hell yes! Even if that means you have no clue how to set up a tent or start a fire. In that case you improvise! You pile as many blankets and pillows as you can into the back of your dad’s pick-up and you head for the lake!

To be honest, this was the most amazing camping experience of my life! The more spontaneous the better, right? The weather was absolutely unbelievable! We had the area all to ourselves, not a single person in site. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and as we laid on our little home-made bed on the edge of the lake I could have sworn it was a dream. It was so still and perfect, it looked like the sky had actually been painted for our benefit alone.

Our fire on the other hand was not so perfect..we forgot fire wood, of course, so the best we could come up with was a few twigs. Surprisingly it actually did the trick for awhile! Our hotdogs were barely warm, and our marshmallows were burnt to a crisp, but hey!..we survived!

But my favorite moment of the whole adventure was this…I woke up at three in the morning and the first thing I saw was a sky full of stars, I was cozy under the blankets and my best friend was sleeping soundly beside me. In that moment, life was good, so good! I was content and at peace! I knew that I could sleep under the stars every night of the week (weather permitted).

22 is the age for adventures, best friends, long nights, early mornings, and freedom!

  1. Awesome. Simply awesome. Dig the casual, unfeigned narrative voice. And 22 is definitely the age for fun, adventure, and freedom. Your description and appreciation of the spectacular cosmos at 3am….made me feel starstruck at the wonder of the dark, vast, pre-dawn sky through your words.
Keep on writing S & Co.!
